Returning to Your Own

Torah describes the laws of shemitah, the laws of the sabbatical year, and also yovel - a Jubilee year. This was a time when Israel was challenged to let the land have its Shabbat, a complete rest from agriculture. And yet this rest was not going to bring economic suffering upon Israel. It’s a holy time. Vayikra, Leviticus 25:11 says - on the fiftieth year lo tiz’rahu ve lo tik’tsaru, “do not sow and do not harvest.” Torah instructs Israel not to plant and not to gather the harvest in the storage places. The vines were to be left unpruned because of the jubilee year. It’s a time of restoration for the land.

The Living Torah by Aryeh Kaplan (Hebrew-English)

This edition of the Torah features a Hebrew text of the Five Books of Moses and a new English translation by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan. As a translator, Kaplan leans quite a bit on Targum Onkelos, and uses Aramaic to elucidate the text better. The volume is supplied with traditional commentaries and notes, maps, tables, charts and more. This new updated edition features a better layout then the previous versions of the Torah. If anyone wishes to read the books of Moses and be exposed to an orthodox Jewish take on these ancient words this translation and commentary do a superb job.
