Untwisted Examples: Part Two (Romans 4-8 ~ 3h)
This series of lectures on Paul’s Letter to the Romans raises multiple questions that some may consider controversial, as the apostle's words are not explained in a traditional manner. The lectures are built on a presupposition of Paul not as a follower of a new religion (Christianity) but a traditional Jew seeking to help non-Jews and Jews in Rome to find a point of genuine unity of faith in the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) without compromising their distinct cultural identities. We move chapter by chapter, zeroing in on the most complicated sentences, considering Greek and Hebrew concepts, background passages, and omitting only the most peripheral content. The discussions were slightly edited to keep the lectures moving and to preserve the most pertinent commentary.
Part One of the lectures focused on foundational ideas such as good news, salvation, faith, works, the law, belief, unbelief, righteousness, and faithfulness as Paul presents them to a mixed Roman and Jewish audience. Part Two focuses on the colorful examples Paul uses to advance his teachings and on how people use his illustrations theologically.
