Misunderstood Foundations: Part One (Romans 1-4 ~ 4h)
This series of lectures addresses key passages and themes in Paul’s Letter to the Romans, a pivotal book for Christian theological understanding. They were delivered live to a mixed audience at a Messianic Synagogue. As such, they express a unique perspective, a presupposition of Paul as a traditional Jew seeking to help both Jews and non-Jews in Rome find a genuine point of unity in faith in the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) without compromising their distinct cultural identities.
The original lectures were entitled “Unity in Diversity.” We move chapter by chapter, zeroing in on the most complicated sentences, considering Greek and Hebrew concepts, background passages, and omitting only the most peripheral content. The discussions were slightly edited to keep the lectures moving and to preserve the most pertinent commentary.
Disclaimer: If you hold to the traditional theological reading of Apostle Paul, these teachings will challenge your understanding of his overall message. The lecturer believes that Shaul has been misread and misunderstood by many of his readers. The explanations of Paul’s teachings are built on historical and cultural Jewish presuppositions, ideas not embraced by the mainstream church traditions. The process of re-reading Paul as a Jew will be supplied with many references to follow this logic. Feel free to agree or disagree, but hear out the alternative perspective that flows cohesively through all 16 chapters of the letter.
