Branches of the Olive Tree: Part Three (Romans 9-11 ~ 4h)

In this series of lectures on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, we move chapter by chapter, zeroing in on the most complicated sentences, periodically considering Greek and Hebrew concepts, background, and omitting only the most peripheral content. What may be most unusual in this study for many viewers is the overall approach we take. We do not extract ideas from Romans, turning them into freestanding theological principles. Instead, we stick so closely to the historical letter context and interpret Shaul's teachings solely in light of this letter's unique purpose and intent.

In Part Three of this study, we focus on Chapters 9-11, which the lector believes are the core of the Letter to the Romans. What Paul wrote prior to this section was for the purpose of laying down a foundation, establishing the essential truths, or "mystery" as he calls it, that he shares in this particular segment of his letter. Paul's explanation of the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in Messiah is powerful if we stay focused on the author's purpose for presenting this idea. And the next section (12-16) will present very concrete ways in which people in a diverse Roman setting can find unity in such a relationship. Paul's overall goal is to respect the differences and find a way to forge unity in a diverse community.
